Research thematics

Prevention and traitment of Candida spp biofilms associated to medical devices
One part of my research activity deals with eradication of Candida spp. biofilms on vascular catheters, and on strategies to prevent their formation. Thanks to several in vitro models mimicking the growth of Candida spp. biofilms which are available in the lab, we are able to evaluate the anti-biofilm interest of different molecules, both natural components (essential oils, terpenic derivatives) and available systemic antifungal agents. Several therapeutic approaches are investigated, such as systemic and lock approaches. On the other hand, anti-adherent or anti-biofilm surfaces are elaborated in our lab, in collaboration with chemistry laboratories. Different grafting approaches are investigated, such as non covalent coating or covalent coating using cyclodextrines to solubilize antimicrobial molecules.

Infectious risks associated to water
A second part of my research activity focuses on the study of infectious risks associated with dental unit waterlines (DUW). Microorganisms from both buccal cavity and environment can be isolated in the dental unit (hand pieces) output water ; these microorganisms may interact inside biofilms growing in dental unit waterlines. Water and aerosols generated during dental cares may represent an infectious risk for patients and dental staff, in particular for immunocompromised persons. We investigate the becoming in water of microorganisms from oral cavity (Candida spp., Streptococcus gordonii) and our results recently showed that Hartmannella is able to promote Candida survival and proliferation in water. On the other hand, saliva would promote the survival of both yeasts and bacteria in water.
